5 Ways To Improve Air Quality In Your Home

We all like to breathe in fresh air. Whether it’s a stiff ocean breeze or the scent of freshly cut grass on a summer’s day, air quality is an important part of our lives. This is just as true inside our homes as it is outside. A house that is stuffy, smelly, and full of air pollutants can be detrimental to your health and wellbeing.  Thankfully there are steps you can take to improve the air quality in your home. We’ve outlined five such steps in this article:

Keep Things Clean

Most of us are familiar with the adage, ‘tidy home, tidy mind,’ but this spans further than simply your mental wellbeing. Household dust can trap allergens and potentially hazardous chemicals. These pollutants can become airborne in a cloud of dust. Keeping your house clean, particularly your floors and carpets, will reduce the amount of dust and help to improve the quality of the air you breathe at home. Vacuuming and mopping are great ways to stay on top of the problem as well as using other homemade cleaning supplies.

Add Some Plants

There are many benefits of having houseplants. They can be worked into a range of interior designs to look great, can help reduce stress, and of course improve air quality. A NASA plant study explored the benefits of interior plants for reducing indoor air pollution. If you’re looking for some inspiration for plants that can help to improve the air quality of your home, this article from groomandstyle.com explores 12 different plants that will help to purify your air.

Control Humidity

An overly humid environment at home is the perfect breeding ground for dust mites and mold. The allergens of both of these can impact respiratory health with long exposure, particularly to those who suffer from asthma. Because they both thrive in humid conditions, using a dehumidifier or air conditioner to keep humidity levels at home at around 30%-50% will keep the allergens in the air under control. There are other steps you can take to reduce humidity, from opening a window when you shower, to fixing leaky pipes.

Let Fresh Air In

If the air at home is getting somewhat stale, opening a window can help to freshen up a room. Of course, this depends somewhat on the quality of the air outside as well. There are systems you can install to improve the condition of your home environment. House ventilation units will filter and circulate air from outside, creating a clean and fresh atmosphere in which you can breathe easy. Opening the internal doors can also help oxygen circulate, whilst drying clothes outside and opening windows to laundry rooms can help reduce humidity in the home.

Switch to Greener Cleaning

We mentioned cleaning above, and it’s a great way to reduce the pollutants that you breathe. However, quite often the temptation is to use heavily scented cleaners to try and create a feeling of freshness. These commercial cleaners are capable of releasing volatile organic compounds into the air. Products such as aerosol sprays, air fresheners, and floor polish release these harmful chemicals which can contribute to chronic respiratory problems. A good alternative is to use ‘green’ homemade cleaners. Simple household items such as white vinegar, lemon juice, and baking soda can all be used to clean your home. They’ll leave it fresh, without introducing harmful compounds into the air.
